Maria Farantouri has been referred to as the "Joan Baez of the Mediterranean" by "Le Monde". "Her singular voice is a gift of the Olympic Gods", wrote "The Guardian". And Fran?ois Mitterrand enthused : "For me, Maria is Greece. This is how I imagine the goddess Hera : strong, pure and vigilant. I know of no other artist who has given so much meaning to the word sublime."
Maria Farantouri has had huge successes with her innumerable concerts all over the world and has left an indelible impression everywhere. She is considered the ideal performer of the songs and other works of the world-famous Greek composer, Mikis Theodorakis, and thus of the New Greek Song.
Born in 1947, music and singing soon became a passion for Maria. After early performances with a choir, her unique contralto voice fast turned her into a celebrated soloist. She was only 16 years old when Mikis Theodorakis discovered her, announcing : "You will become my priestess."
Out of this prophecy developed an artistic and personal friendship which is still flourishing and which has been crowned by numerous records, concert tours and musical projects. Characteristic of these are musical settings of lyrics by major poets, both Greek (Elytis, Seferis, Kalvos, Ritsos) and international (Pablo Neruda, Federico Garcia Lorca...), which lend poetry and depth to her singing.
Forced into exile after the military coup in April 1967, she became a symbol of resistance and democracy through the hundreds of concerts she gave with songs by Mikis Theodorakis, meanwhile a prisoner of the junta.
After her return to Greece in 1974, Maria Farantouri embarked on a number of projects together with some very different artists, which extended and varied her musical repertoire. She worked, among others, with John Williams, Zülfü Livaneli, Leo Brower, Lucio Dalla and Maria del Mar Bonet. Maria Farantouri recorded many albums with songs by Manos Loizos, Eleni Karaindrou and Manos Chatzidakis, but also Bertolt Brecht. Highly valued and exemplary of her musical message is the performance of the "Mauthausen" Cycle by Theodorakis, with the Israel Symphony Orchestra under Zubin Mehta in 1991.
Fusing the worlds of (modern) classical, world music and the Greek musical tradition with her own luminous artistic universe, her unique voice and interpretation has always been one of Maria Farantouri's outstanding qualities : her current tour is yet more evidence of the fascinating results.
Apart from well-known songs from her huge repertoire, built up over decades of artistic development, Maria Farantouri will present songs taken from her latest project. It includes a collection of authentic folksongs from Macedonia and Epirus, as well as unpublished songs by Mikis Theodorakis, inspired by this musical tradition. Revised by Henning Schmiedt and reworked into a new modern form, the songs once again build a bridge between folk art and sophisticated art songs.

Magda Papadaki
She was born in Thessaloniki on the 9th October 1964. She studied at the Aristotles University of Thessaloniki. Her first appearance was with the album BAHAR (LIBRA MUSIC, 2000) of Makis Ablianitis, where she wrote the lyrics for the song 'Astro Krifo' for the voice of Manolis Lidakis, one of the best singers in Greece. Continuing she wrote lyrics for two songs of the album of Manolis Lidakis "Iliko Oniron" (Dream Material, SONY MUSIC, 2001) and "CARGO" of KONTRABANDO (LIBRA MUSIC, 2003). In 2002 Magda Papadaki and Kora Michaelian wrote the story for the musical fairytale 'In the Land of Frozen Water' (LIBRA MUSIC, 2003) by Kora Michaelian and NOR DAR (narrator: Karyofyllia Karabeti).
In 2004 she met the Greek world famous singer Maria Farantouri and wrote the lyrics of her personal album, MOSAIC (composers: Fuat Saka, Ahuva Ozeri, Makis Ablianitis, Ross Daly and others). In the album are featuring some of the best musicians of the world like Hariprasad Chaurasia and Glen Velez (LIBRA MUSIC, 2004). In 2005 she met Michalis Nikoloudis and wrote the lyrics for the album WOMEN (LIBRA MUSIC) with Sotiria Leonardou and Fotini Velesiotou in vocals.
Makis Ablianitis
Makis Ablianitis is an inspired composer and one of the best guitar players in Greece. His relationship with music began at the age of 15 when he got his first guitar. He studied theory by attending seminary courses of Theodoros Antoniou and at the Center of Contemporary Musical Research. Following this, he studied higher theory by graduating from the classes of Fugas and Orchestration with excellent. He concluded his studies at the Berklee Music College of Boston with a scholarship. The period of his studies at Berklee was decisive for his later course as a musician, because at the same time of his studies he had the ability to play with renowned musicians of the Boston jazz scene.
Ablianitis also in involved with the tuition of jazz music by teaching jazz guitar, modern harmony and orchestration at various auditoriums in Athens. In 1993 he formed the quartet "Jazz Steps" and in 1995 the group "Jazz Crew". During the period of 1996 - 1998 he was a member of the ethnic group of Michalis Nikoloudis and Omar Faruk Tekbilek, participating in the concerts they gave in Greece and abroad. His debut took place in 1997 with the album "FLAME KEEPER" (THESIS / 1997). An integral part for his carrier also was his collaboration with the "ARTS, DANCE & MUSIC PRODUCTIONS", in November 1999. It involved the very successful BROADWAY shows with American performers.At his second album 'BAHAR' (LIBRA MUSIC / 2000), Ablianitis met the world famous Indian flute player, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, and one of the best Greek singers, Manolis Lidakis. Not only 'BAHAR' is a very interesting project, but also it was hit at once. Makis became famous and many labels ask for licence to include tracks of BAHAR in their collections. On January 2004 was released MOSAIC (LIBRA MUSIC), the album of the famous Greek singer Maria Farantouri (featuring: Glen Velez, Fuat Saka, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ross Daly). Makis Ablianitis has given 3 songs to Farantouri and made all the arrangements of the album.Makis Ablianitis has numerous participations in festivals and concerts in Greece, Turkey and FYROM.
